The Old Rectory
73 Huntington Road
York, YO31 8RL
01904 - 673675 (or from abroad, +44 - 1904 - 673675)
The no. 13 stops very near our house. It leaves from immediately outside the railway station at 5 to and 5 past, until 7 pm, then every hour. The stop is on the same side of the road as the station, and it really is right outside. If you're already in York, you can catch the 13 in the Stonebow.
Our stop doesn't have a name - pay to Kitchener St., though you aren't going that far. Should be about £1.50.
Keep a look out for white railings on the left like these. As soon as you see them, ring the bell for the next stop. The stop is just after the railings end (you can just see the bus stop beside the car); walk on in the same direction as the bus for about 200 metres.
Currently we think this is the easiest route, and also not too likely to be traffic-jammed, though it's not the shortest.
Leave the A1 at junction 44 and join the A64 outer ring road round the south of York and leave it at the sign for the A1079, which goes between York and Hull. Turn left towards York.
Continue along the A1079, which gets called Hull Road and then Lawrence St, until you meet the city walls at Walmgate (photo). Turn right onto Foss Islands Road, signposted "Inner Ring Road / District Hospital". Keep going past MFI, Morrisons etc on you right.
At the end of Foss Islands Road you see this junction. You want the road to Scarborough (A64), which is the middle lane at the traffic lights. (This is the only hard bit.)
The other side of the lights the road wiggles a bit. Stay in the right lane, like the car in the photo.
(Not the far-right lane or you'll end up in the car park!)
This road is initially called Jewbury, then it becomes St Maurice's Rd.
At the next lights (note the Bile Beans) turn right towards Scarborough (signposted A1036 / A64), taking you onto Monkgate.
At the end of Monkgate is a roundabout. Take the first proper exit, signposted Huntington. This is Huntington Rd.
And here's the house, about 1/2 mile from the roundabout. After the roundabout you'll see river and trees on your right, then they disappear behind houses and reappear a couple of hundred yards further on. At this point, there's a terrace of houses on the left and we are the last (furthest) of these: a double fronted house painted off-white with big red gates. There's an illuminated keep-right bollard just outside.
Park in the drive, or if preferred right in front of the gates. If you park in the marked-off area you need a chit to put in your car which we can supply. Or there is free road-side parking just beyond our house, though often full.
Leave the A1 at junction 47on the A59 and follow it towards York for some while. Cross the outer ring road (A1237). A mile or so later, just past some shops, take the LEFT turn at the traffic lights into Water End, signposted 'Clifton and coach parking' (photos). Note distinctive chimney.
Continue along Water End through the first traffic lights, and at the end of the road (further traffic lights, Clifton Green on your right), turn RIGHT. You are now on the A19 heading towards Bootham.
When you reach Bootham Bar (usually slow traffic here, so you get plenty of chance to see it coming), you'll see the old abbey walls on your right and the city walls ahead. Turn LEFT into Gillygate.
At the traffic lights at the end of Gillygate (Salvation Army Citadel on your left, York St John University ahead and to the right) turn RIGHT into Lord Mayor's Walk.
At the traffic lights at the end of Lord Mayor's Walk, (Monk Bar Hotel ahead), turn LEFT signposted Scarborough and ring road. You are now on Monkgate.
GO TO ******* above for the last bit of the journey
